Today’s Work It DAILY challenge is simple, but powerful: Shut down negative self-talk. We all have that inner voice—the one that whispers doubts, exaggerates mistakes, and chips away at our confidence. For many professionals, especially job seekers and those navigating career transitions, this voice can […]

PodcastsLast month I had the opportunity to participate in an ISE webinar to talk about what works in careers and employer engagement in schools. It was a great opportunity as, as well as me, there were also employers and representatives of schools there. I talked about currently policy and practice, but then we all rolled up our sleeves and tried to solve some of the real problems that people on both sides of the education and employment divide experience.
It is definately worth a watch….

PodcastsI recently had the opportunity to be interviewed as part of Veilederforum-podden (the Norwegian guidance forum’s new podcast). In the podcast I discuss the issue of sustainability in career guidance with Mari Thorbjørnsrud from the Norwegian Directorate for Higher Education and Skills.
In the conversation we discuss both the definition of sustainability associated with the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). These goals set out a broad vision for a sustainable and fair society. But, we also focus in on the issue of the climate crisis and discuss sustainability in this sense as well.
In all cases, the question is ‘what has this got to do with career guidance?’. In the podcast we explore this and consider a range of ways in which career guidance can make a difference to these issues.
The podcast starts in Norwegian, but quickly moves back into English as I am not confident enough to show off my faltering Norsk on a podcast.

J.T. O’Donnell, Work It Daily’s founder and CEO, recently launched a social media campaign on TikTok asking users to share their stories about why they “#workitdaily.”
Why do you do what you do?
Work It Daily’s mission in 2023 is to help millions of people become the purpose-driven professionals they want to be. But in order to do that, we need to change the narrative. We need to stop asking people what their job titles are and what they do for work and judging them based on those answers. Instead, we need to start to get to know the people behind the work.
And the way that we do that is through storytelling.
If millions of us can share our stories about why we work, we will collectively change the narrative. And this is also how we’re finally going to be able to be comfortable working to live instead of living to work. The shift has to come, and we’re starting that shift with this campaign.
@fatimalhusseiny I joined the challenge #workitdaily @Work It Daily #fypシ #bookishmuslimgirl_lb ♬ Epic Music(863502) – Draganov89
Our first participant in this challenge was Fatima, a writer who loves telling the stories of others.
In her TikTok, Fatima states:
Writing is my passion. It’s how I express myself and share my voice through others’ stories. Telling stories is a way of communication and connecting with others and making a difference. I think it’s also a personal journey for me. I love nothing more than just sitting down with someone and hearing about their experiences, challenges, struggles, their triumphs and achievements, and then being able to take all of that and put them into words. There’s something magical about being out there for someone sharing their stories and being there.
Fatima shared her story with us. Will you?
@workitdaily Thank you Fatima for being the first to join our @tiktok social media campaign♥️♥️♥️@fatimalhusseiny We can’t wait to share your story with the world! PodcastsIt was a great privilege to be asked by Tom Richmond to talk about career education on the EDSK podcast, Inside your ED. It was really great to be able to go into a bit of depth about the history of recent careers policy and to consider what we could learn from it. In the podcast you will hear me and Rebecca Montacute from The Sutton Trust in riotous agreement about how career education and guidance needs to be improved.
Hopefully a few politicians are listening.

Yesterday I was talking politics (for a change). We discussed why career guidance was so important, why politicians should care about it and what we are doing with the Career Guidance Guarantee to push that forwards. If you haven’t signed the Career Guidance Guarantee yet, then please sign it now. Once you’ve done that you can kick back and enjoy me, Chris and Sabiha talking careers, politics and why we all need to shout much louder for what we believe in.

PodcastsIt was a real privilege to be interviewed by Jeremy Cline on the Change Work Life podcast the other day.
Jeremy’s podcast is essential listening for everyone in the career development world. He now has 112 episodes, most of which consist of conversations between Jeremy and other experts in different aspects of career development. Recent episodes have focused on the changing workplace after Covid, finding fulfilment and how to make yourself visible at work. All well work a listen.
In my episode Jeremy and I discuss the future and what people can do, both individually and collectively, to ensure that they will still have a careers. Inevitably we discuss robots and the gig economy, but we also touch on globalisation, digitalisation, politics, the economy and career guidance. As ever I argue that it is important not to panic and to recognise that while change happens many things also stay the same.
Jeremy has produced excellent shownotes as well as a brilliant podcast.

PodcastsReaching the ‘hard to reach’ – A creative conversation
A couple of months ago I was invited to take part in one of David Cameron‘s ‘creative conversations’. These are professional development events for Skills Development Scotland. In this session I discussed the involvement of families in supporting the career development of young people with Phil Beadle, former Teacher of the Year, author and iconoclast and Suzanne Zeedyk, a developmental psychologist and leading campaigner about the impact and effect of Adverse Childhood experiences.
It was a really interesting conversation, so I thought that I’d share it here for anyone who is interested.
